THE REAL HUSTLE

Crafty punter tried to cash in on Nottingham Forest bet

There are some crafty punters out there and I think I’ve heard the best chancing story since the old Silvino Francisco tale way back at the start of the nineties
Just to remind punters of that bet, a punter backed five snooker players to win. Written on his docket was T. Meo, K. Stevens, J. White, T. Knowles and good old S. Francisco.
Tony Meo, Kirk Stevens, Jimmy White and Tony Knowles duly won their matches but Silvino Francisco was soundly beaten. But we had the Superbowl the same weekend and San Francisco were playing in it. They beat the Denver Broncos 55-10 on the Sunday evening and on the Monday our crafty punter went in and tried to lift the bet. The settler told him in there was nothing off it – Silvino Francisco had beaten the bet. ‘Oh no,’ our chancing punter replied, ‘that S. Francisco is San Francisco to win the Superbowl.’ Let’s just say the settler chased him out of the betting shop and the punter left with a shrug of the shoulders. Good try.
So on to last Friday night when local punters again tried to hustle local layers.
Value-hungry footie watchers saw that Nottingham Forest were a very attractive 3-1 to beat West Brom in the Friday night game and there were a lot of single bets on Billy Davies’ team, and one punter in particular stuck out.
He placed a massive £200 on Nottingham Forest to win and wrote down on his docket ‘N. Forest 3/1.’ Underneath he wrote ‘£200 win.’
He went in on Saturday morning, not to pick up his £800 – this punter had much bigger fish to fry. When the settler laid out the £800 on the counter, our cheeky punter said, ‘No, no – that was a correct score bet: Forest to beat Brom three goals to one at 33/1. Let’s have £6,600, please.’
Yeah, right! The bare-faced punter was given his £800 and sent on his way. We’re told that he wasn’t the only one to try that particular trick that day. Ah well, God loves a trier.

Superbowl quarter final weekend

Some American football folks thanks to our resident expert Scott Silver

Saturday Night 9.30pm
Arizona Cardinals at New Orleans Saints
I like the Cardinals to upset the number 1 seed Saints.
The Cardinals are still upset at losing the Superbowl last year,
and are 5/2 to knock off the well-rested and very rusty Saints.

Saturday Night / Sunday Morning 1.15am
Baltimore Ravens at Indianapolis Colts
This is the best game of the weekend.
What the Ravens did last week to the all-mighty Patriots
was shocking. They ran the ball down their throats, not
even pretending to pass the ball. Would love to pick them
again at 2-1 to knock off the Colts, but hard to bet
against Peyton Manning this year, especially at home.
Colts at 5/13

Sunday Afternoon 6.00pm
Dallas Cowboys at Minnesota Vikings
Hired Gun Brett Favre looks to extend his legendary
status for the Vikings. Cowboys have looked very hard
to beat the last few weeks and the Vikes have been
up and down. I like the home (dome) field advantage
in this one. Vikings 5/7 to advance.

Sunday Evening 9.30pm
New York Jets at San Diego Chargers
The Jets have the right formula to win playoff games,
number 1 at running the ball, and number 1 at
stopping the run. That formula won't be enough -
the Chargers have too much firepower.
Chargers at 2/7 to advance.

Of note: last week 3 of the 4 games were blowouts.
It should change this week, im counting on 3 of the 4
to be close games. In that event, im taking a quad of
Arizona +7, Baltimore +6, New York Jets +8
all three of these teams to keep it close, and adding
the Vikings -2 (Quad 16/1)

Worth a Squid . . .
Take any 3 home teams to win by less than a touchdown
(winning margin 1-6) at approx 90/1

On to the soccer selections..

PG QUAD

We start with our weekend quad and with our weekend ‘knocker’. We have opted for on-song BIRMINGHAM (13/8) to take all points at Fratton Park where they take on Portsmouth.
Alex McLeish has seen his improving side stretch their unbeaten run to a record 12 games in the Premiership. They visit a Pompey side who are missing big players who are on duty in the Africa Nations Cup and we expect the Blues to maintain their good form.
WOLVES (5/4) put together a few good home wins in December to pull themselves out of the bottom three and we think Mick McCarthy’s men could grab three vital points at home to bad travellers Wigan.
BLACKPOOL (11/8) are a very hard team to beat at Bloomfield Park and Ian Holloway knows a win against his former employers QPR on Saturday could put his team into the play-off frame.
NORWICH (13/8) will be gunning for revenge at Colchester on Saturday after their 7-1 mauling on the first day of the season at Carrow Road
How things have changed, with then Colchester boss Paul Lambert now in charge of the Canaries who are second in the league after four straight wins and we think they can make it five come Saturday.

PG FIVEHIT

On to the odds-on Fivehit and we start with hard-to-beat IPSWICH (10/11) who should collect all points at home to East Anglian neighbours Coventry.
NOTTINGHAM FOREST (4/7) are flying at the minute and can grab three more points at the expense of Reading at the City Ground.
HUDDERSFIELD (4/7) are another form side and Lee Clark’s men can grab another win when they entertain Southend.
SWINDON (8/11) are another team in form and can keep their spot in the top six with a win over Gillingham.
ROCHDALE (4/7) are flying high at the top and they could extend that lead with a win over Port Vale.

PG XXX

On to the draw treble and we start with the live Saturday evening game at Goodison where in-form MAN CITY take on an EVERTON side who are difficult to beat at home. This looks a tight game and we have gone for the draw at 11/5.
In the Championship Gordon Strachan’s ‘bookies’ team MIDDLESBORO travel to Bramall Lane to take on a rejuvenated SHEFFIELD UTD side and we are taking the unpredictable ’Boro for a draw in this one at 12/5.
PRESTON will be keen to impress their new gaffer Darren Ferguson and can take a point at Ashton Gate against draw specialists BRISTOL CITY – this gets an 11/5 pricing.
Remember those perms – doubles and a treble.

PG GOAL RUSH

We end our weekend soccer selections with the ever-popular goal rush and we have gone for five results, priced at 12/1 with Sean Grahams.
Our five games where we think both teams will score are Everton v Man City, Peterboro v Derby, Hartlepool v MK Dons, Walsall v Brighton and Wycombe v Charlton.
