Punchestown News:
Betfair increases Punchestown presence with awards sponsorship
Punchestown racecourse is delighted to announce that Betfair are to sponsor both the Leading Trainer and Jockey Awards at this year’s Irish National Hunt Festival. Betfair will generously present the winning most jockey and trainer with a cheque to the value of €5,000 each.
This announcement is an expansion on Betfair’s existing commitment to the Irish National Hunt Festival, where they have sponsored the Betfair.com Novice Handicap Steeplechase since 2003.
Betfair already have betting markets available on both awards and will be offering an in-play betting market on both throughout the Festival. Should Willie Mullins continue his recent purple patch he looks set to retain the leading trainer award for the sixth consecutive year. Meanwhile, Ruby Walsh has claimed the honours in his respective category seven times in the last ten years losing out only to Paul Carberry in 2002 and again three years later in 2005. Unsurprisingly, Mullins and Walsh dominate the early Betfair betting and are trading at 1/2 and 1/3 respectively.
On hearing the announcement Ruby Walsh, champion jockey commented that “The Betfair leading Trainer and Jockey Prize at the Punchestown Festival is far superior to that offered by any other track at any other Festival in Ireland or the UK. It is an excellent bonus to what is already a brilliant Festival of racing”.
Graham Ross, Betfair’s Irish Country Manager stated; “As part of our ongoing support of the Punchestown Festival and our longstanding commitment to Irish Racing, Betfair is delighted to sponsor the Leading Trainer & Jockey Awards at this year’s Festival. We’re looking forward to building on the success of these awards in previous years and generating even more public interest in the achievements of the top training and riding performers at the highlight of the Irish National Hunt season.”
Dick O’Sullivan, General Manager Punchestown said “It is so encouraging to see such a significant industry figure such as Betfair not only sponsor a race at the Festival but also further enhance their support of Punchestown with their generous sponsorship of the Leading Trainer and Jockey Awards. This arrangement is an excellent fit for both parties and presents an opportunity to highlight this additional feature. The retained value of this award is sure to be very well received by all. We will keep all media and public up to date throughout the Festival with the on-course scoreboard and daily press releases”.

just read the last txt there bout bernard dunne and to be honest PG, theres no place on this blog for arseholes like that. De fella just spent the last 9weeks living and training in west belfast and then goes and wins a legit title. Now i know theres a lot of banter on the blog but a prick making statements like that should have his comments removed or better still, go up to Holy Trinity and tell that to the Hawkins or Dunne himself
arsehole hater

100% correct mate. Bernard Dunne is a gentleman and proved on Saturday that he is a top fighter. He fights out of a West Belfast club so of course the people in the North are pleased with his win!!
I bet the same guy was cheering on Ireland in the rugby, what a clown this guy is but he's only looking a rise out of us
Poland great bet at the weekend

Very quiet this week folks - footy is not worth betting on and the good horses don't run to the weekend..
I'm hoping Slugger O'Toole gets into the Lincoln.
We told you about the whisper on him way back in January and he has since changed to the Stuart Williams yard
He loves Doncaster and the 33/1 on offer has to be worth a pound or 2???
Frank Warren's show at the Odyssey Arena, Belfast, will now take place on Friday, May 15.
The card, which will feature the second professional fights of the 2008 Olympic trio, James DeGale, Frankie Gavin and Billy Joe Saunders, will be topped by Commonwealth heavyweight champion Martin Rogan.
It has been pushed back a week because of television scheduling.
"Belfast is a great fight city, and I am delighted to be staging another show there," said Warren.
"The fans are among the most passionate in the world, and they will be in for a treat on May 15.
"Martin Rogan was involved in one of the best heavyweight fights I've seen for years when he beat Matt Skelton in February, and I'm really looking forward to watching his first defence.
"And DeGale, Gavin and Saunders are all very exciting young fighters who are destined for the very top."
Ticket details will be announced shortly.
I'm taking the wife and my son to this one, I think it will be a great night!!
whos rogan fighting?
Mickelson set to overtake Woods.
The gap between Woods and Mickelson in the standings is the smallest ever
Tiger Woods could see his position as the world number one taken by Phil Mickelson ahead of the US Masters.
The gap between the two has gone down to only 0.2 points in recent weeks.
Woods, who is back in action after eight months out following knee surgery, plays in this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational in Bay Hill.
If he fails to finish in the top two, Mickelson, who is not in action this week, would have a chance to leapfrog Woods at next week's Houston Open.
Woods has been world number one for the last 198 weeks, taking over from Vijay Singh and has been top of the standings for a total of 540 weeks in his career.
Mickelson has never filled the top spot in the rankings.

Rogan's opponent hasn't been announced yet but tickets are set to go on sale very soon so obviously they would need to announce his opponent before the tickets go on sale!!

Stuart Williams is playing the waiting game to see if Slugger O'Toole sneaks into the William Hill Lincoln at Doncaster on Saturday.
Like quite a number of other useful sorts, Slugger O'Toole needs horses to drop out and if five fall by the wayside, he will be in the final 22.
It will be the first time the four-year-old has raced for his new trainer, as he spent the previous seasons of his career with Geoff Huffer and then Barry Hills.
Last year he won three times, including at the South Yorkshire venue in a seven-furlong event.
"He will run on Saturday and the plan is either to run in that race or the Spring Mile," said Williams.
"He's not certain to get in the Lincoln, so we will have to see.
"He was held up a bit with the weather but we've had a clear run lately. I bought him at Newmarket sales. The main thing I liked about him was his form, so I took a chance."
great blog Gerard

I only gave my selections for the final day of Cheltenham sure! What about the 33/1 2nd I gave in the Foxhunters on the final day? Didn't hear you mentioning that!
Can you not pick your own winners or are you too thick that you have to rely on others to pick them for you?? Maybe you should stick to betting at Portman Park or Brushwood!!
Last years 2nd King Johns Castle is out of the Grand National!!
He suffered an injury at home and has been withdrawn.
Haakima (5/2) in the opener at Kempton

Gerard,
Here are some very interesting National trends that you may want ATN readers to know when trying to pick a National winner........
WEIGHT
In the last 57 years only Red Rum has carried more than 11st 5lbs to victory and Hedgehunter is the only horse since Corbiere in 1982 to carry more than 11st (Hedgehunter only carried 11st 1lb). We know there is no Red Rum in this years field so you'll be looking for a horse carrying no more than 11st.
AGE
The last time a 7 year old won the National was 68 years ago and you have to go back a further 27 years to find the last 6 year old winner. You'll be looking for a horse aged between 8yo - 12yo inclusive.
Only 2 teenage horses have won the National and the last one was 85 years ago.
Horses aged in double figures have won 12 of the last 18 runnings but 9yo's also have a decent record.
DISTANCE
Every winner of the National since 1970 has previously won over 3m or further so that defeats the myth that 2m 4f horses are perfect for the National.
In 07 the six runners who had yet to win over 3m or further failed to finish, as did the seven similar runners in 06.
BREEDING
No French bred horse has won the National in almost 100 years.
In 08 eleven French bred horses took their chance, including fav Monkerhostin, and none of them were placed.
HEADGEAR
Blinkered, visored or cheekpieced horses have a poor record in the National. Since L'Escargot in 1975 only Earth Summit has carried headgear to victory. Since then 146 horses have failed to carry headgear to victory, although McKelvey finished 2nd in 08 with headgear on.
IRISH HORSES
Irish trained horses have a good record in the National winning 6 of the last 9 renewals.
PREVIOUS RUNNERS
In last 20 years 18 of the horses finishing in the first 4 ran in the previous years National.
6 of the last 7 winners had previously run over the National fences.
CONCLUSION...
Taking all of this plus some other minor trends the first 5 selected are.....
1st - SLIM PICKINGS
2nd - BEWLEYS BERRY
3rd - CHELSEA HARBOUR
4th - NAUNTON BROOK
5th - DUN DOIRE
