ANDYTOWN MASSACRE FOR BOOKMAKERS

25/1 Stonker: Andytown and jockey Felix de Giles are led into the winner’s enclosure at Cheltenham

BEST CHELTENHAM EVER! That was the cry from local punters last week after the bookmakers took a hiding on the last day.
We have received numerous emails and phone calls from local people who thanked us for letting them know about the horse
We put up ANDYTOWN as one of our big Cheltenham fancies a few weeks ago and our Monday paper picked it up as the front page off-lead. He was due to run in the Coral Cup but trainer Nicky Henderson decided to run him in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle.
Believe it or not, he was the only course and distance winner in the field, and at Cheltenham that means a lot. With jockey Felix de Giles aboard he won back in November so the 25/1 looked too big in my view.
Andytown gave de Giles a dream ride and won pulling a cart. He could now be aimed at Aintree early next month and as soon as we know, so will our readers
Trainer Nicky Henderson beamed afterwards: “He's been chasing since winning here, but to be perfectly honest with you he hated jumping fences.
“He didn't like it the first time so I thought he had a good enough mark over hurdles and he won here in November then got beaten at Wetherby, so I went back chasing but he's hated it twice now.
“That meant I had no option but to send him back over hurdles and even schooling over them he has been so much happier.
“I didn't want to say anything but I thought he was my dark horse nap of the week.”
Chris Deery, General Manager of Sean Grahams, commented: “You have to take these results on the chin and fair play to our Andersonstown shop customers, they bet with their hearts, and boy have they got big hearts. They’ll need big pockets too because the horse has cost us £15,000.”
Chris also pointed out that the race was a guaranteed odds race with Sean Graham, which meant that if you took the early price of 16/1 you were still paid the S.P. at 25/1. So a win-win situation for all customers.
“With Kauto Star winning the Gold Cup with the ever-popular Ruby Walsh on board, it’s been a great day for punters, not least our Andytown customers who clearly know how to beat the credit crunch,” added Chris, who’s obviously a sporting guy.
That’s great to hear and I have to say it rounded off a great week for the Punters Guide. We were well in front going into the last day after giving out an amazing ELEVEN winners over the four days. For the record, the winners we gave out at the festival were: GO NATIVE 12/1 WON; FORPADDYTHEPLASTERER 8/1 WON; WICHITA LINEMAN 5/1 WON; GARDE CHAMPETRE 7/2 WON; COOLDINE 9/4 WON; MASTER MINDED 2/5 WON; NINETIETH MINUTE 14/1 WON; SILK AFFAIR 11/1 WON; DUNGUIB 9/2 WON; KAUTO STAR 7/4 WON; ANDYTOWN 25/1 WON.

Weekend Soccer Selections

RAM IN TO DERBY at 1/1
On to the weekend soccer and it’s starting to get down to the nitty-gritty end of things, so it gets even tougher to get winners on the board – trust me on that one.
PG QUAD
We start with our weekend nap and we have opted for Nigel Clough’s DERBY (1/1). They host struggling Barnsley who have lost 11 matches out of 17 on the road this season. Nigel Clough has made a big difference since joining the Rams and a win on Saturday could quash any lingering relegation fears.
BLACKBURN (5/4) need points on the board and quick and we fancy them to get maximum points at home to West Ham who are crippled with injury problems.
WYCOMBE (6/5) grabbed a point at leaders Brentford last weekend and we have taken them to follow up with a win over Rochdale this weekend.
Making the quad up are QUEEN OF THE SOUTH (5/4) who are on a good run at the moment and we think another win beckons at home to Livingston.
PG FIVEHIT
Quickly our odds-on weekend FIVEHIT and BIRMINGHAM  (8/13) should take care of Norwich, HUDDERSFIELD (8/13) should take maximum points at home to Cheltenham while LEEDS (10/11) should win at Crewe.
Leaders LEICESTER (1/2) should win again, this time at the expense of Colchester, and making the five-hit up are ST JOHNSTONE (4/6) who entertain and hopefully beat Airdrie.
PG XXX
Just missed out on our draw treble last week but still a 10/1 double up.
We start at STOKE’s Britannia Stadium where MIDDLESBORO pay a visit with both teams desperate for points – a point each looks the bet.
BOLTON travel to the Hawthorns to take on WBA in another basement battle and we think another tight one is likely.
Into the Championship to make the XXX up and we think READING could grab a point at Selhurst Park against Neil Warnock’s erratic CRYSTAL PALACE side.

WEEKEND RACING

Winter glory for KANDIDATE
Let’s hope our winning run continues through to this weekend. The big races seem to be on the flat with the Winter Derby at Lingfield and the start of the Irish flat season at the Curragh on Sunday.
We start with the Winter Derby at Lingfield on Saturday (3.05) and the betting is led by the Chris Wall-trained Premio Loco who looks the one to beat judging by his two performances at Kempton and Lingfield this year. He is always delivered late and hold-up jockey George Baker will leave it to the last half-furlong before producing Loco. The 3/1 on offer as we went to press represents good value.
Kandidate is as tough as nails and ran fourth behind second favourite for Saturday’s race Re Barolo. He got into trouble in that race so he will be there or thereabouts come Saturday.
The jockey/trainer combination of Clive Brittain/Neil Callan is always to be watched and the last time Callan rode Kandidate he won the listed Magnolia Stakes, so the 20/1 looks great each-way value.
They Bet: Premio Loco 3/1, Re Barolo 5/1, Charlie Farnsbarns 6/1 , Suits Me 7/1, Without A Prayer 8/1, Bronze Cannon 10/1, Scintillo 12/1, Halicarnassus 16/1, Whistledownwind 16/1, Bon Spiel 20/1, Kandidate 20/1, Dockofthebay 25/1, Drill Sergeant 33/1, Mahadee 33/1, Internationaldebut 40/1, Baylini 66/1.
We finish at the Curragh on Sunday with the Keatley Groundcare Irish Lincolnshire (4.15) and we have opted for the Jim Bolger-trained Prima Luce who is ultra-consistent and should figure prominently in this big field come Sunday.

DOWNPATRICK COMPETITION
Competition time, folks, courtesy of Iain Duff, Manager of Downpatrick Racecourse.
It's for the TOALS RACEDAY at Downpatrick next Sunday (March 29). First prize is a cracker – Sunday carvery lunch for four people to include admission, tickets and race cards. Six admission tickets to runners-up. To enter answer this simple question: Who won the Gold Cup last week? Email us at puntersguide@ire landclick.com before next Thursday, March 26, or post it to the PG Competition, Teach Basil, 2 Hannahstown Hill, Belfast BT17 OLT.

I have to say it's funny some of the stories I have been hearing about this Andytown winning. "The bookies were cleaned out", "the bookies lost a fortune" etc. The fact is Andytown being a 25-1 winner was a great result for ALL bookies concerned. O.k half of Andytown may have been on it but with what stake? £5 each-way? £20 each-way? Let's even say £20 on the nose? The race was named after Martin Pipe and he must have had the first 4 in the betting at least and the bookies would have lost 5 times as much if the likes of Big Eared Fran or another Pipe runner had have won.
The bookies may have had to pay out a few quid on Andytown but it was by no means a bad result for them, in fact, I'd say the majority of them would have been delighted with that result!!

Japs Eye (aptly named)

There has been a bit of an over reaction to Andytown's win, do you seriously think the bookies were reeling because of a 25-1 winner? 99% of the people on the road backed it simply because of it's name, probably having £5 each-way on it.
If you think that win hurt the bookies then you are a bigger foll than I thought!!

Anonymous said...

listen mate,my sister in law works in a local bookmakers.
They got hit for just over £40,000 in 1 race. You are talking crap.No bookie
EVER wants to lose money and anyone who thinks a bookie does not mind losing money is A FOOL

JAPS EYE

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

Did they lose £40,000 on Andytown, a 25/1 winner?? I highly doubt it!!

They lost a few quid on it but I bet you they would have lost more if Big Eared Fran had won!!

Anonymous said...

who brought it to their attention!!

ANDYTOWN NEWS that's who!

Audere Est Facere a few points mate never heard such dribble

If a horse called Andytown had not of been running then the women and men of West Belfast would not have backed anything on Friday right?
bookies lost out big time on this race in these parts. there is no getting away from stat/fact - you keep going on about big eared fran and the Pipe horsies but the men/women of this road didn;t back any of Pipe horses -why? because they don't know who Pipe even is - these punters where virgins when it came to writing a docket out.
these local layers took a hammering on this particular horse on Friday it's black and white buddy black and white!

sean grahams have claimed to have paid out 15grand on Andytown. I think that works out at a maximum 600quid on the nose. going by the size of the area and how many sean grahams there are, it doesnt seem like much was bet. unless most punters bet elsewhere

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

You are deluded if you think that the likes of Ladbrokes, Paddy Power etc. "took a hammering" over a 25/1 winner!!!

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

I may be wrong but my own view is that the 3 main bookies (Ladbrokes, Powers and Grahams) would have lost minimal amounts on Andytown winning. I know a lot of people backed it but I bet you that the vast majority of the stakes were small i.e £1 - £2 wins, £5 each-way, £10 each-way etc.

The stories I have been hearing people are running about saying that the bookies were "cleaned out" ot "took a hammering" which is very hard to believe!!

Anonymous said...

I didnt have a red cent on andytown due to a combination of work and forgetfulness and i must admit i was raging with myself for not backing it. Having said that, ANYONE who took dosh of ANY bookie be it 15000, 15quid or 15 million then fair play. better in their pockets than keeping sean graham et al from 1 less lobster on their plate

What's all this about lads?
The bookmakers took a hammering on ANDYTOWN..
9 local pitches run out of money on Friday afternoon at the last count and in Belfast alone they are now talking a six-figure some.
Punter in Ladbrokes (top of the rock) had a £100 double with Oh Crick (7/1) and Andytown (25/1)
another Grahams punter had £275 each/way on Andytown - Bookmakers took a pounding!

Anonymous said...

i was in alocal bar last friday and the bar in the bookies told me he paid out £9,500 alone on andytown although he laid the majority of it off.

i would guess every bar in belfast who have a bookies lost heavily also.

I also heard a bookie in west belfast had to send out twice for money there was that much paid out on andytown

petrot chelly

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

Gerard,

Fair enough but a bookie running out of money doesn't mean they took a hammering. They keep as little amount of cash on the premises as possible so because they ran out of money doesn't mean that they lost 10's of thousands.
I'm sure they did lose a right few quid but the stories about them "getting hammered" and "being cleaned out" is a bit over the top for me.

Punter's Guide said...

It's the busiest time of the year in most pitches with Cheltenham (GOLD CUP DAY) so when you ratio what they are taking in and paying out, I think that tells the story.
Personally I won enough for a sunshine holiday this year after backing the horse on Betfair at 32/1 and in the pitch at 25s, so in my head - I cleaned up!

Anonymous said...

Audere Est Facere, i know where your coming from and people saying the bookies were 'cleaned out' and 'lost a fortune' are just turns of phrases. I think everyone gets the jist if it,that a lot of coin was paid out. Now im not saying Paddy Power will be selling
lighters in Castle street nor will he be in the bankruptcy courts as a result of Andytowns win, but the facts are that substantial sums were paid out. 20grand alone in 1 bet in ladbrokes as gerard says and god knows what we havent heard for 1 reason or another i.e. wives, girls and mates.

johnnyboy

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

Johnnynoy

Again, fair enough, but I can almost guarantee that the £20,000 Ladbrokes at the top of the Rock "supposedly" (has anyone any evidence this bet took place??) paid out they would have made at least treble that throughout all their Irish shops over the whole Cheltenham week alone. So, although they would rather not have paid this out they are still well in front after Cheltenham!!

Anonymous said...

Audere Est Facere(c) is it just jealousy that you did not back puntersguide brilliant nap.

I'd say if you had backed it you would not be shouting your mouth off here.

well done gerard for allowing us to take money off the bookies

Raffo

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

It's not jealousy, I'm just saying that some people get carried away when telling stories about this. In my opinion no bookmakers on the road or further afield for that matter lost a wink of sleep of Andytown's win. They lost a right few quid but compared to what all their shops lifted over the 4 days of Cheltenham it would be minimal.

I had £20 each-way on a 33/1 2nd that day so I was happy enough!!

Anonymous said...

Never seen a place like this blog before.....a horse loses you all slabber & argue amongst each other.....a horse wins for a change you would think ya would all be happy and get along.....but no!

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

I'm not arguing. Even though Raffo, as usual, tries to start one. I just made the point about the over exaggeration of Andytown's win, either way though I don't care as it's good to hear people winning money of any sort.

It's a discussion blog mate so if it's all getting too hot for you there's an easy alternative!!

The sale of Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane by Tottenham has helped the club post record pre-tax profits of £39.8m for the last six months of 2008.

Last summer Spurs made over £51m from the sale of Berbatov to Manchester United and Keane to Liverpool.

Spurs also sold six other players for significant fees during that period.

"During the 2008 summer transfer window gains were made on the sales of a number of registrations," said chairman Daniel Levy in a statement.

In what appears to be a reference to the sale of the strike duo Levy added: "It needs to be noted that the club did not make the player trading profits in a manner that was planned or welcomed as they arose, in the main, from the regrettable sale of certain key players."
The other players to leave the club were Pascal Chimbonda, Steed Malbranque, Teemu Tainio, Paul Robinson, Younes Kaboul and Anthony Gardner.

Keane and Chimbonda have both since rejoined the club and the next financial figures are expected to be balanced out by these deals and the additional signings of Jermain Defoe and Wilson Palacios.

The profits, meanwhile, should assist the club's proposed investment in a new training ground and stadium, named the Northumberland Development Project, with a full planning application due in "the next few months".

"We have benefitted from having a robust business that is well financed and has continued to be able to support investment in the first team, whilst progressing two major capital expenditure projects - the new training centre and the Northumberland Development Project."

Harry Redknapp believes Tottenham are two wins away from guaranteeing Barclays Premier League survival but also has his sights on making a late push for Europe.

Spurs climbed into 11th in the table with their weekend win at Aston Villa and moved six points clear of the bottom three.

But they are also only five points off seventh place - currently held by West Ham - and that will now secure a Europa League spot unless Everton win the cup and finish outside the top six themselves.

Redknapp said: "How many points needed to survive? I spoke to Peter Storrie at Portsmouth and he was talking about 42 points to me and that is a bit frightening. I don't see you'll need 42 points.

"When the pressure comes on it gets very difficult for some teams. It could still take 39 points, something around that mark.

"It's two wins for us. For some teams you are talking about six wins. West Brom probably need another 16-17 points.

"We've just got to keep trying to win games. Every manager apart from the top four - plus Aston Villa, Everton and West Ham - will be looking over their shoulder."

Redknapp added: "Every year someone goes into freefall but also every year someone pulls out of it when things look bleak.

"I was at Portsmouth two or three years ago when we looked at trying to get 20 more points with 10 games to go after I think we only had 16 or 17 all year.

"We managed it. West Ham have done something similar. Fulham did it last year.

"But I would love to finish seventh. We're playing so well in recent weeks and there's no reason we can't keep pushing up the table now."

However, Redknapp dismissed reports he had claimed Tottenham would be challenging for the top four next season.

He said: "To break into the top four is very difficult. They're on another level still, in my opinion.

"I certainly didn't say I see us being a top four club next year. I wouldn't put myself under that kind of pressure."

With a bit of luck, frank warren will get him a handy enough defence so as not to jeopadise a potential world title fight. Rogan deserves a good payday as hes earned it. I think Warren is smart enough and will get some no namer to fight Rogie seeing as it will be his first defence of the Commonwealth title. He may even do that for his next couple of fights before getting him a shot at a bigger, well known name and a chance to get a World title fight. He deserves a good crack of the whip though for his efforts.

One thing I wish Rogie would change though is to get rid of that scum bag Eamonn Magee!! How annoying is it paying £15 or whatever for Sky Box Office to listen to that torag constantly screaming "Go on Martin son, go on Martin son, go on Martin son......

Expected to win today being stepped up in trip. I got 8's in Ladbrokes and backed it each-way just incase.

Great news!! This should fend off any potential bidders in the summer..........

Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon has committed himself to the club by signing a new contract that will keep him at White Hart Lane until 2014.

The 21-year-old has been in great form of late, featuring in 41 of Spurs' 45 games this term and scoring five goals.

That form has led to speculation that Liverpool were lining up a big-money move for the player in the summer.

But Lennon, who arrived at Spurs for £1m from Leeds in 2005, has quashed that talk by signing a five-year deal.

The Yorkshireman was this week named in Stuart Pearce's England Under-21 side for the friendlies against Norway and France later this month.
It had been thought his fine form would see him force his way into Fabio Capello's full England squad, but Spurs manager Harry Redknapp believes it is only a matter of time before Lennon is a full international again, having first earned a call-up to the 2006 World Cup.

"I am sure Fabio Capello will have been impressed by Aaron this season," said Redknapp at the start of the month.

"England need players who can beat people and, in Theo Walcott and Aaron, they have got two people down that right-hand side who can do that."

Real Madrid, currently managed by former Tottenham boss Juande Ramos, were also said to be interested in the right-winger's signature.

Ginger Tools

It means that if the Fat Waiter Rafa does want Lennon in the summer he will have to pay in excess of £25m!!

I wouldn't want Rafa anywhere near WHL! The guy hasn't got a clue when it comes to tactics i.e. 1-0 in a game with 10mins to go, he pulls off Steven Gerard and replaces him with Lucas!!! WTF!!??

Harry Redknapp is a far better manager than the fat waiter!!

I heard the Glaziers want Graeme Souness to replace Bacon Face Fergie when he retires! Strange move that!!

Audere Est Facere(c) what rubbish.

have a look at europes biggest club competition.
rafa has won it got to a final and 3 other semis.

enjoy the relegation dog fight(again)
while we plan another assault on europe

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

Just like you planned the assault on the Premiership which you led and then bottled it!!??

Liverpool are a European competition side managed by a European minded manager. They will never win the Prem League until they get a decent, British manager i.e. Redknapp, Moyes, O'Neill etc.

By the way what was the score when Liverpool came to WHL to play "relegation strugglers" Spurs?

And what was the score when they travelled to WHL to play "relegation strugglers" Spurs in the Carling Cup this season?

Oh dear!!

Go and read the rules again Bacon Face, you's were beaten fair and square and ginger and Shrek both deserved to be sent off!! What about Berbatov?? Thanks for that £30m but we warned you that the guy is a sulk and only cares about himself!!
