SAINTS WILL BE MANNING THE LIFEBOATS

This Sunday/Monday's Superbowl features the top two teams in the US,  the New Orleans Saints and the Indianapolis Colts and the PG have signed up Stateside expert Scott Silver to review the big game...
What a game we are in for, folks, with two teams who went untouched in the regular season before resting their starters in the final month.
Both teams blew away their first opponents in the play-offs, but had a tougher time in the semi-finals.
If you are thinking of missing the game, you could be alone. Last week’s semi-final between New Orleans and the Minnesota Vikings was not only one of the best play-off games ever, it was the most-watched TV show in the last 20 years in America, beating even the final episode of
Seinfeld!
Last year's Superbowl was incredible – a Steelers touchdown on the last play of the game to beat the shocked Arizona Cardinals.
This year, we're looking for the game to match the format that has won us big on EVERY SUPERBOWL in the last seven years – the favourite wins the game, the underdog keeps it close.
Yes, the Saints have the karma, with the entire world (outside of Indianapolis) rooting for them after what Hurricane Katrina did to their city. But the excitement of going to their first-ever Superbowl might also be their curse. The hype is too big, their eyes too wide. Only a few of the Saints have ever played in a final, and once they settle down, they could be down by 14 points. They will have to deal with the unnatural start time, the delay between warm-ups and pre-game festivities and the extended halftime entertainment (The Who). The Colts have been through all this already.
This game features the game’s two best quarterbacks, Drew Brees of the Saints and the Colts’ Peyton Manning.  Brees has had an amazing few years, racking up yards like a Manning and touchdowns like a Manning (this is starting to sound like a VW Golf commercial). Yes, Brees is doing his best to emulate Manning, but there is only one Manning. (Actually, we lied. There are three Mannings. Peyton's brother Eli throws for the New York Giants, and their father Archie was a longtime quarterback of these same Saints, although back then they were called the Ain’ts cuz they Ain’t got no points on the board!
Manning not only has won a Superbowl, but he just picked up his fourth league Most Valuable Player award (Brees finished second). Manning knows that another trophy or two could put him above Joe Montana as the best-ever. I personally think Manning is the best already. He is the only quarterback who calls his own plays – he waits to see what the defence is doing AND THEN calls the play. The man is an absolute genius.
Last week, he spent the first half taking in what the New York Jets were doing defensively, and then, his team down by 11 points, ran up 30 unanswered points without a sweat.
Neither of these teams have much of a running game to speak of, both are pass-happy, which should make for great viewing. Both defences play hard, although the Colts are a bit faster, the Saints a bit bigger. The game is being played outdoors in Miami, so kicking could be a factor in a close game.
I just don't see how Peyton Manning can lose this game. He has a lot more big-game experience as well as a title on his resumé. He’s playing at a level right now where he may just be unstoppable. So get the chili cooking, get the fridge full of beer, and tell the boss you'll be in late Monday!
Picks
I like the Colts to build a big lead, take their foot off the gas, letting the Saints score at the end, but still winning the game between 7 and 12 points (winning margin 7-12 @ 4/1).
Colts to win at 5/11
The point spread is 5.5 (evens) but we will be taking a three-point teaser to get the spread over seven points
Three-point teaser (Saints + 8.5) = 1/2.
Other Lines
Saints to win outright 9/5.

I think it'll be a big scoring game. I'm taking the Saints to edge it - upset this year.

We were hit for major money on Wednesday night like every other bookmakers so why not just get on with it and stop the complaining.

don't want to get involved in this squabble folks.
but I have his email and he works in Toals.
I can tell you this, because Toals is in his email address but who cares - let's move on from this and get some winners on the board for the weekend.
Austin Collie looks my bet for first touchdown at 11/1 on Sunday night!
and our Friday NAG is De Bansha Man 3.35 Bangor who was tipped to the PG a few weeks back and finished sixth so we will take another chance today 12/1..

Footy SELECTIONS
FIRST things first, folks. I get a lot of stick here when I take a team to beat Man Utd – it’s not because I hate Utd, it’s because I like value and am always prepared to take a chance on the underdog.
Last week we witnessed a truly brilliant Man Utd performance – they quite simply tore the Gunners apart at their own gaff. They got a brilliant 45 minutes out of Nani, who has at last arrived at Utd after living in the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo, while Wayne Rooney showed why he’s head and shoulders above every other Premiership footballer just now with another masterclass.
People who know me will tell you that I always maintained that Rooney was better than Ronaldo. But Rooney has improved even further since the Ronaldo departure and for me is the second best player in the world, just behind Lionel Messi.
Arsenal have been pushed out to 12/1 with Sean Grahams, and rightly so – they have it all to do at Chelsea on Sunday where they are as big as 4/1 to claim three points.

quad

On to the weekend action and we start our PG Quad at the Reebok and have taken Owen Coyle’s BOLTON (11/8) to take all points against a Fulham team who have lost their way in recent games, losing their last FOUR matches.
WYCOMBE (11/8) need points on the board and can follow up on that victory against Bristol Rovers with three points at home to Yeovil.
SWINDON (11/8) are flying at home, winning their last five games, and can make it six with a win over Charlton.
Three good prices in the bag by 4.55 hopefully and a sweat on the live game between Doncaster and Reading.
Brian McDermott deservedly go the manager’s job on a permanent basis and we are taking READING (5/2) to take a vital three points in this one in their quest for Championship survival.

fivehit

Our Fivehit has hit the crossbar in the last two weeks and in fact out of the last 15 selections we have had 13 winners and two draws, which is good form in anybody’s book.
We start in the championship and are banking on NOTTINGHAM FOREST (4/6) to bounce back after that Derby defeat with a win over Sheffield Wednesday.
SHEFFIELD UTD (4/6) are in the play-off places and can stay there win a win over Derby.
LEEDS (8/11) can get back to form with a win at leaky Hartlepool to keep tabs on Norwich.
We go to the Scottish Cup Fourth Round for our final two selections and KILMARNOCK (5/6) can progress to the quarter-finals with a win over First Division side Inverness.
ABERDEEN (4/5) travel to First Division Raith Rovers and can book their place in the last eight.

xxx

We start off in the Championship with our first two draws and we think Leicester can take a point at Bloomfield Road against Blackpool.
MIDDLESBORO, or should I say Celtic B, travel to Portman Road to take on hard-to-beat Ipswich and we suggest an ‘X’ in this one, folks.
Hopefully a few pounds banked by the time we go into the last leg of the XXX.
We are taking ASTON VILLA to grab a point at White Hart Lane when they take on a Spurs team who are also chasing that up-for-grabs fourth spot.

racing

Our sports department got a text attacking the Punters Guide’s recent horse selections, and rightly so. As usual, we took the criticism on the chin.
We have not been in great form of late and with Cheltenham 2010 just six weeks away we need to start getting winners on the board, and we have a chance to redeem ourselves at the weekend.
We have top-notch racing from Sandown, Doncaster and the big meeting at Leopardstown on Sunday and that is were we begin our weekend preview.
We have the Grade One Spring Juvenile Hurdle getting us under way on Sunday and Carlito Brigante lowered the colours of Leblon here over Christmas when cantering home and will be hard to beat again at the weekend.
Potential superhorse Dunguib is on show in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle, his final prep run before the festival and as usual he will take some stopping. Meanwhile, Weapon's Amnesty looks the bet in yet another Grade One affair, the Dr P.J. Moriarty Novice Steeplechase.
On to the big one, the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup, and we think that Rsa Chase winner at the Cheltenham festival, COOLDINE, could be a big player in this one.
He has disappointed on his last two starts, but if we are to believe reports that he is back in the form that saw him romp home at the festival then he will take some catching here, with old foe Joncol representing the big danger.
Great racing at Doncaster on Saturday with the Blue Square Handicap Chase being the main event – and the most open. Kalahari King is on his seasonal bow and should run a big race.

Tiger Woods is reportedly targeting a return to golf at the WGC Match Play Championship in Arizona on 17 February.

World number one Woods, 34, who has won 14 majors, has not appeared in public since crashing his car last November and later admitting to "infidelity".

"Rumours of his return surfaced in Australia and were initially greeted with scepticism, but persist," said BBC golf correspondent Iain Carter.

"It would be a surprise but a reliable source says he will play in Arizona."

Woods, announced on 12 December 2009 that he was taking an indefinite break from playing golf to tackle problems in his private life.

His last tournament was the Australian Masters in Melbourne, which he won on 15 November. The crash happened 12 days later.

The Melbourne Herald Sun newspaper reports that his management team has approached organisers about the logistics of playing at the WGC event at Dove Mountain in Arizona.

But Carter said: "It remains hard to believe that Woods, who has not appeared in public since crashing his car outside his home, would choose to return at the Match Play.

"He admitted infidelity and apologised to his family for 'transgressions' and has been in hiding ever since."

The top 64 players automatically qualify for the Match Play event and competitors have until 12 February to notify organisers of any withdrawal.

But any comeback by Woods would need extra planning because of the intense media interest in him.

"Although he has been on 'indefinite leave' from the game he has only missed one tournament that he would routinely play, last week's PGA Tour stop in San Diego," added Carter.

"The Matchplay is sponsored by Accenture, one of the companies that ended sponsorship deals with Woods in the wake of his fall from grace.

"It would be unlike Woods to play in a tournament backed by a sponsor that had embarrassingly ditched him.

"But, given this background, to return in Arizona could send a powerful message that he intends to be a changed man.

"The tournament is unique on the golfing calendar because it is a knockout event culminating in a 36-hole final. Woods made his return from knee surgery there last year and has won it three times."

On Thursday, six-time major winner Sir Nick Faldo told the BBC that returning to tournament golf would prove Woods' "saviour".

"I'd have thought he'd be dying to get back, I don't believe he'll give up the opportunity to play in the majors," he said.

Meanwhile, world number two Phil Mickelson urged Woods to come back to the PGA Tour, saying "the game of golf needs him".

US golf legend Jack Nicklaus said Woods would find it harder to break his record of 18 majors if he does not compete this year.

And on Wednesday five-time Open champion Tom Watson urged Woods to "show some humility" when he does finally choose to return.
