HAD a few punters on this week about Ladbrokes and their each-way rule in the Irish Grand National.
Some local punters were left disappointed after the firm failed to pay out on the fifth-placed Pomme Tiepy.
The customers said they were upset after they saw an advert in a Monday paper stating that they were paying out on the first five. For their part, Ladbrokes say that this only applied to Telebet customers and this was visibly marked in small print at the bottom of the ad.
Springfield punter Gerard McKenna nevertheless was still unhappy, saying that the advert made no sense to him with the Irish National part being separate from Telebet information. The fed-up punter told the PG that Grahams and Paddy Power paid out on the first five, so why not Ladbrokes?
Gerard added that it is a matter of principle to him, not money, and that he is taking his case to the Independent Betting Adjudication Service (IBAS).
Robbie Boyd was another punter who unwittingly lost out at Ladbrokes last week.
He placed a £20 quad last Tuesday with the firm, taking Linfield, Glentoran, Insitute and Donegal Celtic.
All teams won but Robbie was only paid out on Linfield, Glentoran and Insitute. Ladbrokes don’t bet on the lower leagues here and so his Donegal Celtic selection was deemed a void bet, leaving our punter out of pocket.
Goes to show, it’s always worth checking.

Master Minded supplemented for Kerrygold Champion Chase at Punchestown
Highest rated dual Champion Chaser to run at Punchestown
Punchestown racecourse is delighted to announce that the Paul Nicholls trained Champion two mile chaser Master Minded has been supplemented for the Kerrygold Champion Chase at next week’s Punchestown Irish National Hunt Festival.
Master Minded, the highest rated horse in training and widely regarded as the finest two mile chaser in recent times, will run at Punchestown next Tuesday provided the ground is suitable for him.
Paul Nicholls trainer commented “We have decided to supplement Master Minded for the Kerrygold Champion Chase as it looks like there will be plenty of rain at Punchestown which will suit us”.
Dick O’Sullivan, General Manager of Punchestown said “It is a marvellous privilege to have a world class horse like Master Minded entered to run at Punchestown. Paul Nicholls has been a great supporter of ours and had an especially good Festival last year. It will be a wonderful opportunity for racing enthusiasts to see a horse of this calibre in the flesh and we look forward to welcoming Master Minded’s owner Clive Smith to the home of Irish National Hunt racing. Throughout the winter we safe guarded the ground as we pride ourselves on delivering excellent going. All credit goes to Sean Ryan and his hard working team not to mention Joe Collins our Clerk of the Course”.
Richie Galway, Punchestown Racing Manager added “We have been fortunate that it has been a relatively wet April and based on the forecast over the next couple of days we would expect the ground to be soft and therefore ideal for the national hunt horses. This year more than ever, soft ground is essential for retaining the key horses like Mikael D’Haguenet, Punchestowns, Cooldine, Barbers Shop and of course Master Minded.”
The €200,000 Kerrygold Champion Chase is off at 6.05pm on Tuesday 28th April, the opening day of the Punchestown Irish National Hunt Festival. The Festival runs from Tuesday 28th April to Saturday 2nd May.
