National Field down to 88

The 2009 John Smith’s Grand National, worth a record £900,000, has 88 acceptors going forward following the passing of the second scratchings deadline, details of which are revealed earlier this week.
Several horses that ran well at the Cheltenham Festival could head for the John Smith’s Grand National, at Aintree on Saturday, April 4, including My Will, the current 10/1 joint-favourite with Aintree’s official betting partner, totesport, and Roll Along who both ran well when fifth and sixth respectively in the totesport Cheltenham Gold Cup on Friday, March 13.
My Will is one of five possible contenders from the yard of champion trainer Paul Nicholls, who is still seeking his first John Smith’s Grand National success. The other acceptors from Nicholls’ Somerset yard are Nozic, the 2006 totesport Becher Chase victor Eurotrek, the progressive Big Fella Thanks and Cornish Sett.
Tom George has his string in fine form this season and is looking forward to running Kilbeggan Blade in the John Smith’s Grand National. The 10-year-old has won three of his four starts this season, scoring twice at Towcester and at Sandown, and completed his John Smith’s Grand National preparation by finishing second in a novices’ hurdle at Warwick on March 8.
The Gloucestershire-based handler said: “I see that Kilbeggan Blade is now set to carry 10st 4lb and it looks like we will definitely get into the John Smith’s Grand National. The race has been the plan since he won his second London National (at Sandown) in December.
“That was his only start over fences this term and we not only did this to protect his mark but also because he seems to run better over fences after a spin over hurdles. His two victories at Sandown came on the back of hurdle appearances and he really enjoys a bit of a change.
“His run at Warwick should have put him just right for Aintree and it was a matter of getting a run into him rather than expecting him to win. He’s only had four starts all season and he’ll be going into the John Smith’s Grand National a fresh horse which is the key to him.
“He looks like he stays all day and he’s a great jumper. The reason he likes Sandown so much is because there is such an emphasis on jumping and I think he will enjoy the Grand National fences.
“The one thing we really need to look at is who will ride him on the day but I think the fact that we have 10st 4lb makes it a lot easier.”
Currently sharing favouritism with My Will is the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Butler’s Cabin, an eye-catching fifth behind Character Building in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Handicap Chase at Cheltenham last week. Another horse to run at the Cheltenham Festival was last year’s John Smith’s grand National hero Comply Or Die, who performed well for a long way when seventh in the William Hill Trophy Handicap Chase.
Horses trained in Ireland have won the John Smith’s Grand National no less than half a dozen times since 1999 and another strong challenge is in prospect this year with a total of 25 Irish contenders still engaged. Prominent among these are the Dessie Hughes-trained Black Apalachi, who proved his ability over the course with an authoritative victory in the totesport.com Becher Chase at the Northwest Racing Masters in November; the 2006 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner War Of Attrition; last year’s runner-up King Johns Castle, who recently returned to action with a promising effort over hurdles at Naas, and Snowy Morning, who finished third in 2008. Other leading contenders from the other side of the Irish Sea include last year’s Irish Grand National victor Hear The Echo, Southern Vic, who represents Ted Walsh, successful with Papillon in 2000, and Chelsea Harbour.
Also included among the acceptors are Rambling Minster, who put himself firmly in line for a crack at the world’s most famous chase with a superb display of jumping when successful in the Blue Square Gold Cup at Haydock Park on February 14, the 2006 Hennessy Gold Cup victor State Of Play and Cloudy Lane from the stable of Donald McCain, who finished sixth in 2008.
The next acceptance stage for the John Smith’s Grand National is at the five-day stage theis Monday, (March 30). The maximum field size for the John Smith’s Grand National is 40 runners.

They bet:
10 Butler's Cabin, 10 My Will, 12 Black Apalachi, 12 Character Building, 16 Big Fella Thanks, 16 Comply Or Die, 16 Hear the Echo, 16 Rambling Minster, 20 Snowy Morning, 20 Southern Vic, 25 Chelsea Harbour, 25 Cloudy Lane, 25 King Johns Castle, 25 State of Play, 25 War of Attrition, 33 Cant Buy Time, 33 Darkness, 33 Flintoff, 33 Himalayan Trail, 33 Hot Weld, 33 Irish Invader, 33 Kilbeggan Blade, 33 L’Ami, 33 Maljimar, 33 Parsons Legacy, 33 Preists Leap, 40 Brooklyn Brownie, 40 Companero, 40 Cornish Sett, 40 Golden Flight, 40 Niche Market, 40 Offshore Account, 40 Roll Along, 40 Silver Birch, 50 Afistfullofdollars, 50 Battlecry, 50 Conna Castle, 50 Dix Villez, 50 Dun Doire, 50 Eurotrek, 50 Fleet Street, 50 Hobbs Hill, 50 Idle Talk, 50 Kings Advocate, 50 Knowhere, 50 Mon Mome, 50 Nine De Sivola, 50 Nozic, 50 Out the Black, 50 Patsy Hall, 50 Pomme Tiepy, 50 Stan, 66 Bagan, 66 Beat the Boys, 66 King Harald, 66 Musical Bella, 66 Ollie Magern, 66 Pak Jack, 66 Reveillez, 100 Alexanderthegreat, 100 Always Waining, 100 Arteea, 100 Bible Lord, 100 Fundamentalist, 100 Ice Tea, 100 in the Loop, 100 Iron Man, 100 Kelami, 100 Le Toscan, 100 Mattock Ranger, 100 Nadover, 100 Oodachee, 100 Seymour Weld, 100 Tom Sayers, 100 Tumbling Dice, 100 Without A Doubt, 100 Youre Special, 100 Zabenz, 150 Lord Killeshanra, 150 Malko De Beaumont, 150 Milan Deux Mille, 150 Pass Me By, 150 Puntal, 150 Sandhurst, 200 Cerium, 200 Lysander, 250 Mont Misere.

Lincoln favourite EXPRESSO STAR will only run if the course see's some rain between now and Saturday.

Connections have warned they want to see some rain if they are to let the colt take his chance.

Peter Shoemark, racing secretary for trainer John Gosden, said: "We are praying for a bit of rain. They only had 0.5mm overnight but there is a bit forecast before Saturday I think."

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

Gerard,

If EXPRESSO STAR does get pulled out would that give Slugger O'Toole a chance or have the final dec's been closed??

Weekend Soccer:

As our regular readers know we hate these international weekends, but hopefully we can knock out a winner or four for our faithful in the weekend World Cup qualifiers.
We start with the weekend PG Quad and we are banking on IRELAND (1/1) to win at Croke Park where Bulgaria pay a visit minus best players Dimitar Berbatov and Martin Petrov. An Irish win will put them in pole position in Group 10, pushing them fully 10 points clear of the Bulgarians in the table and putting them in great stead to face the Italians next Wednesday.
WALES (11/10) need a win at home to keep their World Cup qualification dreams alive and we think they can get it at the expense of Finland, a win that could move the Welsh second.
CYPRUS (11/10) are a hard team to beat at home and although they sit bottom of Group Eight we think they will beat the Georgians on Saturday evening.
Making the PG Quad up are POLAND (11/10) who take on an injury-ravaged Northern Ireland team at Windsor Park as the Poles try and bounce back from that October defeat in Slovakia and make a move in this group.
PG FIVEHIT
On to the odds-on weekend five-hit and we have a mixed bag of internationals and domestic football.
BELGIUM (4/6) need a win to move second and should do that with a win over Bosnia while FRANCE (8/13) need all points in Lithuania to move closer to the top two in Group 7.
PORTUGAL (4/6) are feeling the pressure and need a win badly in Group 1. They should beat Sweden.
BURY (5/6) are starting to motor and can take all the points at home to Bournemouth as they bid they chase an automatic promotion spot.
WYCOMBE (10/11) can take advantage of Shrewsbury’s bad away record and hopefully get our five-timer up in the process.
PG XXX
Another 10/1 double last week (this is almost starting to get boring) as we continue to hit the bar in our draw treble. Try these draws this weekend – Barnet v Darlington, Peterboro v Leicester and Leeds v MK Dons.
All draws priced at 11/5 – remember the perm doubles and treble.

Some decent boxing on tonight and tomorrow night.

Scotland's Ricky Burns takes on Englished based Irish born Michael Gomez in Glasgow. Burns is the 4/9 fav with Gomez getting a 7/4 quote. The two of these guy's hate each other and had to be pulled apart on a few occassions during the build up to the fight and I can see this being an entertaining fight. I'd like to see Gomez win but I feel that Burns may just be too good.

Brian Magee takes on Tony Dodson on Saturday night with Magee being the 3/10 hot fav and Dodson getting a 13/5 quote. I'm not sure whether Magee is putting his title on the line here but either way a win looks the only result for the Lisburn man.

On the 25th April Nottingham's Carl Froch takes on Jermain Taylor in the USA. Froch is 4/5 fav and I fancy him to take this one. His last fight was one of the best fights I've seen and he is a fighter that has a strong punch but also a strong chin.

2nd May is the big one, Manny Paccquiao v Ricky Hatton. Paccquiao is the 4/9 fav with Hatton at 15/8. Personally, I reckon the 4/9 about Paccquiao is the bet of the year and I will certainly be having a bit of it. Hatton is a tough opponent but Paccquiao is in a different league and he can prove himself to be the undisputed P4P king and hopefully set up a date with Floyd Mayweather Jr in the summer.

Audere Est Facere, dunno bout bet of the year. fight of the year maybe. this really is a 'pick em' fight. very close to call. Hatton is very strong at the weight and will be 7-10lb heavier when the first bell goes. i think hatton is capable of doing it, but he'll have to work 3mins of each round to do so. i certainly wouldnt have big money on either

johnnyboy

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

Johnnyboy,

Fair enough but I disagree. I think Pacman has far too much speed, skill and class for Hatton. Oscar De La Hoya, one of boxing's greatest fighters, was a lot heavier when Pacman destroyed him. I know De La Hoya is past his best but it was still a super performance from Pacman.
I'll be lumping on at 4/9!!

Anonymous said...

super performance?Oscar de la hoya is finished .He only fought him for the money.Hatton will be a different class of fighter than de la hoya.Hatton is at his peak,de la hoya was on the scrap heap.It will be a classic of a fight.Just hope the ref lets ricky fatton fight and does not break it up every time he gets in close

adriannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

Hatton won't be able to get close with Pacman's lightning fast hands. He is the P4P king and although Hatton will be a tougher opponent than De La Hoya I believe that Pacman will again be successful. I'm very confident of that which is why I'll be having the 4/9.
Floyd Mayweather Jr gave Hatton a boxing lesson and in my opinion Pacquiao would beat Mayweather!! Hopefully after he beats Hatton we will see that fight!!

Audere Est Facere, The mayweather fight was a different kettle of fish. Now THAT was the bet of the year. I actually backed Mayweather to win in the 10th. But hatton moved up in weigh and lets face it, Mayweather was great. Some people tried to blame joe cortez for not letting him fight inside but cortez is a fine referee, probably the best out there and certainly not a homer like mickey vann, who done about 10 fights on the spin for hatton. What makes this fight different, for me, is that Hattons at his best weight, Pacmans not. Hatton, altho not a devestating puncher,is a terrific body puncher. Pacmans been stopped with body shots before (altho in fairness it was early in his career and maybe not entirely legit if you get my drift) by a bantamweight (?). Hattons a far bigger banger than the guys who have stopped pacman. but this is only my opinion. If your going to tank him, fair play to ya, he wouldnt be the worst person to tank ha!

johnnyboy

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

Personally I thought Cortez interfered to much in Hatton's fight v Mayweather but no matter who refereed it Mayweather was simply too good. I also backed Mayweather in that fight. I backed De La Hoya v Mayweather before the Hatton fight and thought De La Hoya was a shade unlucky.
Whatever happens it will be a great fight, I just hate paying £15 - £20 to Sky to watch it!!

Anonymous said...

Audere Est Facere, your right. Galls me to pay it too. Was in the free state for the Khan fight the other week and the greedy bastards were looking near 24euro even tho it was bout 15quid in belfast. I ended up not getting it. You would expect to pay that for an Ali or Ray Leonard fight

Johnnyboy

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

I ended up watching the Khan v Barrera fight on my PC. This is where I watch most Spurs matches that aren't on TV.

Anonymous said...

Audere Est Facere(c) audley harrison had lightening fast hands for a heavyweight and big rogie got at him.If the ref allows the fight to be fought the way it should be,hatton will rough him up on the inside and it will be a close fight.I saw Morales's first fight with pacman and Morales beat him by getting inside with body shots. The rematch the ref had a shocker and did not allow him inside.Never has a ref been so important to a fight before.

its probably a case of "which camp pays the ref the most money"

I read an article recently that Freddie Roach is calling for Cortez to ref the fight and if he does ref it in the same way he did the Hatton v Mayweather then that would make me even more confident of a Pacman win.

CHARACTER BUILDING, a leading fancy for the Grand National, has been withdrawn after suffering a minor injury at home. The horse was the subject of a gamble after winning at Cheltenham but he may now have to settle for either the Irish or Scottish equivalent of the race.
His withdrawl will more than likely see the weights raised slightly again.

like it or not he won an olympic gold and you have to be a class fighter to win any medals at the olympics.

It was a comparrison about getting inside someone with handspeed. If the ref is not paid off and allows the fight to take its natural course hatton is in wit ha 50/50 chance. He is probably the best body puncher of all time and pacman does not like to be roughed up inside as
morales proved

Winning a gold in the Olympics and becoming a successful heavyweight pro is a massive difference!!

Harrison had the height, strength and arguably the skills to become a great but the one thing he lacks is courage and that has been his downfall. In 20 or 30 years time when you read about Audley Harrison you will read more about his failure and his joke fights as a pro more than about his gold medal!!

Audere Est Facere(c)ITS STILL A FACT THAT TO WIN A GOLD MEDAL AT THE OLYMPICS YOU HAVE TO BE A CLASS FIGHTER.

HE WAS A BRILLIANT AMATEUR BUT WHEN THE GLOVES GET SMALLER AND YOU ARE HIT HARDER AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THE HEADGUARD IS GONE IT MAKES A DIFFERENCE.

BECAUSE YOU ARE A GOOD AMATEUR DOES NOT MEAN YOU WILL BE A GOOD PRO BUT UNDOUBTABLY HE WAS THE BEST IN THE WORLD WHILE AMATEUR.HE HAS THE MEDAL TO PROVE IT

Audere Esr Facere, please forgive me for even mentioning his name in a boxing yarn, but i have to say it. You said Audley Harrison had the height, strength and AURGUABLY THE SKILLS!!!! Im almost speechless. please retract the last part. You'l regret it if you dont. maybe not today or tomorrow but soon. All he had was height and hype. As for strength, iv drunk stronger shandies. Skills? Non whatsoever, for 2 reasons.
1. Hes a chancer who was in the right place at the right time in sydney and
2. well there is no 2 cos the first one was adequate enough

THE TIGER IS BACK

Tiger Woods overcame a five-shot deficit to beat Sean O'Hair and win his first title since returning from injury at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

After rain delayed the start of the final round at the Bay Hill Golf Club in Orlando, Woods had closed to within a stroke of O'Hair by the seventh hole.

Defending champion Woods moved level with a long putt on the 15th.

And he sank a superb 16ft putt on the last to deny O'Hair and secure his sixth title at Bay Hill.

Ireland's Padraig Harrington fell away over the closing holes with bogeys at the 16th and 18th to end the tournament at one over.

Woods, playing in his third tournament of the year following his return to action after knee surgery, began the day on two under, five strokes behind second and third-round leader O'Hair.

And Woods signalled his intent with birdies on the second and third, where O'Hair found a bunker and dropped a shot to make his lead just two strokes.

A bogey at the fourth briefly halted Woods' momentum but he got the shot back with a birdie at the seventh, and after O'Hair dropped to five under the world number one was within a shot.

The field was gathering behind the leading pair by now, with John Senden and Pat Perez on two under and Harrington in a group one stroke further back.

A major move looked likely on the 14th when Woods failed to get out of a bunker at the first attempt, but O'Hair missed with a birdie effort and Woods sank a magnificent downhill putt for par to remain one shot behind the leader.

Woods won the title last year with a 25ft birdie putt on the last

Woods finally got on level terms when he rolled in another lengthy putt on the 15th, and he moved ahead when O'Hair found the water at the 16th as Woods got up and down after a poor drive.

The drama continued at the par-three 17th when Woods drove straight into a bunker, his ball plugging under the lip, while O'Hair found the heart of the green.

After O'Hair rolled his putt alongside the hole and made par, Woods attacked his effort but went wide and the pair headed to the 18th tied at four under, with playing partner Zach Johnson still in contention at two under.

But not surprisingly it was Woods who attacked the pin on the final hole and he sank a magnificent 16ft putt for an incredible victory, wheeling away and punching the air in delight.

"It feels good," he said afterwards. "It feels really good to be back in contention and feel the rush. It's been a while.

"I hadn't been in the mix since the US Open, so it was neat to feel the heat on the back nine again, and got myself into the hunt and into contention."

Asked about how his rivals cope with such a final-day charge, Woods added: "I'm trying to beat them just how they're trying to beat me. It doesn't change.

"It's just about being there and somehow timing it right, and making putts and pulling off shots at the right time.

"Some guys put themselves in contention more times than others, but still, we're all trying to win tournaments."

I must say I wouldn't have backed Woods at the 6/4 available at the start of the tournament but he has proved that he is almost back to his very best.
I will take Tiger Woods on in most tournaments as there is no value in his price, he is currently 15/8 fav for the US Masters which starts next week but I'll be looking elsewhere for an each-way bet.
