Spurs to thwart the Man Utd quadruple bid

ANOTHER 10/1 draw double helped out us out last weekend as we search for the bet that will help us through Cheltenham, which gets under way in a fortnight.
Paddy Power paid out on a Man Utd domestic treble last week in a PR stunt that may cost the firm close to a million and we have one of the first of those three trophies up for grabs this weekend.
The Carling Cup Final takes place on Sunday with holders Spurs taking on quadruple-chasing Man Utd at Wembley.
I’m sorry, but if Alex Ferguson sticks to his original plan and plays the kids in this one then I think Paddy Power could be paying out again – this time on Spurs.
A few bets we have put up for Sunday’s final are Luka Modric to score the first/last goal at 14/1; back both teams to win on penalties at 10/1; Spurs to win it outright at 2/1 and 9/2 in 90 minutes.
THE PG QUAD
On to the weekend quad and we begin with our banker bet – our last six bankers have all won so in good form at the moment. Bookies team LEEDS (1/1) get our vote against Scunthorpe, who are on a bit of a rocky run in the league at the minute and Simon Grayson’s men can take advantage of this.
QUEEN OF THE SOUTH (5/4) have at last found their feet and we are taking them to win at Clyde on Saturday.
I backed COWENBEATH (1/1) to win Scottish Division 3 at the start of the season and the runaway leaders can go further clear with a win over closest rivals Stenhousemuir.
Making our weekend quad up are in-form INVERNESS (11/8) who have looked a different team under Terry Butcher and they should collect all points at home to Motherwell.
THE PG FIVEHIT
On to our odds-on five-hit and we start with in-form ROSS COUNTY (5/6) who should get the better of the argument with Airdrie. Leaders RAITH ROVERS (5/6) can take another step closer to promotion with a win over Peterhead.
BURNLEY (4/5) will have one eye on that FA Cup game with Arsenal but more importantly a win over Sheffield Wednesday could put them in a play-off place.
Leaders BRENTFORD (10/11) are playing very well at the minute and should be backed to beat Bury.
Another team playing well are CHESTERFIELD (4/5) and they looked nailed-on at home to beat lowly Barnet
THE PG XXX
In the last three weeks we have hit the bar with two draws but still three 10/1 winners – can this be the week for the XXX?
Promotion-chasing CARDIFF travel to St Mary’s to take on relegation-threatened Southampton – a draw looks a good result for both teams. WATFORD are starting to get going at last but we fancy CRYSTAL PALACE to grab a point at Vicarage Road.
Hopefully we have the first two up going on to our last draw selection on Sunday and a few quid banked.
We are taking MAN CITY to gain a point at Upton Park against West Ham at Sunday lunchtime.
All draws priced at 11/5 and remember that perm folks – doubles and treble!

Well done big Rogie, always discounted by bookies and most punters yet his courage and determination always see's him through. It goes to prove that in boxing it's more how well you can take a punch rather than how well you can throw one which is why Amir Khan will never be champion!!

Spurs and Man U match was a great match to watch and I must admit over the 90 mins we were definitely the better side but in the 30 min extra time period our tanks were empty. I didn't fancy our chances if it went to penalties but I was delighted with the boys performance. Aaron Lennon tortured Evra and Benoit Assou Ekotto had Ronaldo in his pocket and if it weren't for Ben Foster's performance Spurs could have won it in the 90.
If we play like that every wek we will stay up no bother!!

By the way, what about Ronaldo diving? Think the ref got it spot on. King did catch Ronaldo but the 'winker' was already halfway down before that and the ball was about 10 yards away from him. Well done Chris Foy who had a great game himself!!

Bristol City beat me out of my bet at the weekend but I touched lucky and did a £20 treble on Sunday, Sheff Utd, Bolton and Blackburn. Gets me near £240.
Didn't back Rodie but was glad to see him win!!

News from Waterford's Cheltenham preview night is that Mick Fitzgerald's NAP of the whole meeting is Kasbah Bliss. Now this is a tip in itself as Fitz absolutely loves Punchestowns and has talked him up something shocking in the past few months but he feels that Kasbah Bliss is the bet of the meeting!!

Good story about big Rogie.......

A shot at the European heavyweight title now awaits newly crowed Commonwealth heavyweight champion Martin Rogan.

Promoter Frank Warren believes the European Boxing Union will make Rogan the number on challenger after his dramatic stoppage of Skelton, who refused to put his European belt on the line on Saturday night.

“I don’t know why Matt wouldn’t put the European title on the line but that was his decision. He’s now lost that title because he has been beaten and we want to do everything we can to get Martin that fight,” said Warren.

“Belfast is going to be the stage for Martin’s next fight and I expect it to be for the European title.”

Should Rogan be named as the number one challenger, it seems that he would be matched with Alexander Dimitrenko, an unbeaten Ukrainian based in Germany as he is the current mandatory challenger.

Whether it is a European or Commonwealth title fight, Rogan is set for a homecoming at the end of May at the Odyssey Arena or King’s Hall, which he is relishing and he even threw out a challenge to World rated David Haye.

“If David Haye can come up with a million pounds then certainly I would fight him,” said Rogan.

“But it’s up to Frank what happens next. I’m just glad that he has guaranteed that my next fight is in Belfast and that’s going to be a very special night.”

Meanwhile, Rogan ruled out a re-match with Skelton, who simply folded under the Belfast man’s relentless assaults.

“Matt asked me for a re-match but he’s behind me now. I’m only looking forward,”added Rogan.

“I could tell from early on that I was hurting him with the hooks to the body and head and even though he was catching me and leaning on me there was no way I was not winning this fight.

“I know that at the weigh-in there was a snigger from some because I was 16st 1lb and he was nearly two stone heavier but I’ve knocked bigger men out of the way to get into a fight. 18st was no big deal.”

so much for utd gubbing spurs 4 or 5. its amazing how many utd men were squealing like banshees when they won, fair enuf i would have did the same, but these same men up to last week were saying spurs only won a mickey mouse cup! They must hav had some party in tokyo and bangkok.

Have to take my hat off to martin rogan. although i know where liams coming from, its not just his ability to take a punch which is great, its his heart. im not exaggeratting here but its been a long time from iv seen a man with not the greatest ability in the world show true heart and a champions heart at that. I fancied skelton slightly but i was never as
pleased to be wrong. Hopefully he'll get the fianancial rewards that his heart has earned. A true life rocky story

Ernie Els has backed Rory McIlroy to become world number one after the Northern Ireland teenager made the WGC Accenture Match Play quarter-finals.

"I think that you're probably looking at the next number one in the world with him," said Ernie Els.

"He's going to be a major factor in world golf.
"He's got all the tools. He's got a lot going for him."

McIlroy, making his professional debut in the United States, has remained calm despite the attention.

"I still have got a long way to go," he said.

"And my main goal is to try to get into the top 10 in the world and then if I can do that I'll try and get to number two and then Tiger comes back fit and strong.

"You've just got to go out there and play golf. Just try and make birdies and try and shoot good scores and the rest will take care of itself."

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

Tiger Woods' close friend Mark O'Mera said that McIlroy is a lot better than Woods was when he was McIlroy's age.
I believe McIroy's da and a few of his friends stand to collect a right few quid if McIlroy wins a major before he is 25!! A bet they did over a year ago which is looking like a very shrewd investment now!!

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

Gerard,

Leeds are becoming a bookies team and were very lucky at the weekend, plus their recent away record is poor. They are a different side though when Jermaine Beckford plays but I fancy Oldham who had a great win over promotion rivals Millwall at the weekend.

Barstool said...

they are both bookies teams IMO.

Audere Est Facere(c) said...

Possibly Barstool, but before Oldham's home defeat at the hands of Bristol Rovers I think you have to go back to November to find their last home defeat so they are hard to beat at home.
I'm not touching the natch myself but I wouldn't touch Leeds with the perverbial 'barge pole' these days, home or away. The same applies to Liverpool and Man City!!

Man Utd are a great side and to win the League and the Champions League last season was great but to bring that World club championship trophy up is pathetic. The Carling Cup is a far better trophy than that!! Travelling to the other side of the world to play teams that are nowhere near the claibre of Everton or Aston Villa let alone Man U, it's a joke!!

Question and answer session with Willie Mullins from the Sportinglife.......

How are preparations going for your whole team ahead of the Cheltenham Festival?

Willie Mullins: I'm very pleased with the way things have gone apart from Hurricane Fly. The rest have been going well with very few problems.

You've a strong novice hurdling team even without Hurricane Fly. How's Cousin Vinny since he unseated at Leopardstown?

WM: I'm very happy with him. He did a nice bit of work on Saturday and he might do another bit before he goes to England. So all is well.

You've said you're not making a decision on whether he goes in the Supreme Novices' or the Ballymore Properties until nearer the time, but are you leaning towards one or the other at this moment?

WM: No, I'm just keeping an eye on the horse, keeping an eye on what's running where and we'll make a decision later on. I'll keep an eye on the ground too, although I don't think that'll be a major issue. We'll just keep an open mind.

Wherever he goes his win in the Champion Bumper last year shows he likes Cheltenham...

WM: He does, he likes the track. He's a course winner and it's good to go there knowing you're able to handle the place.

Do you think he needs to brush up on his jumping to be a major player?

WM: I imagine most novices' will make a mistake of some description during the race and he's jumped very well in most of his races. The race before he was running in a gale force storm and he paddled over the last but other than that he's been jumping quite well.

Mikael D'Haguenet's another exciting novice...

WM: He seems to have a lot of ability and I'd probably like to see a bit of rain for him to show his best but I'm happy enough he's gone the right way all season for me.

He's excelled in softer ground, but he's shown a bit of speed as well hasn't he?

WM: Over a trip he's got plenty of speed and he's a lot more speed than we thought he had.

Onto your novice chasers Willie. Cooldine in the RSA Chase, it must give you a boost for Ruby Walsh to choose your horse over Paul Nicholls' What A Friend?

WM: Yes, Ruby was very happy with him after his win at Leopardstown, he was very fond of that and he hasn't done anything wrong at home either. He jumped nicely at Leopardstown on Sunday schooling over fences so all is okay at the moment.

Did Ruby school him on Sunday?

WM: Yes, he was happy with him. He made a little mistake at the last but Ruby blamed himself for that - he didn't think he was going to stand back at it and he just sat on him instead of asking him but he'll know for next time.

It was an excellent run last time when he beat Forpadydeplasterer...

WM: That's right he showed a lot of guts and determination that day.

And three miles at Cheltenham should be right up his street?

WM: It shouldn't be any harm to him at all on the evidence of his hurdles season last year. He got better as we stepped him up in trip.

Your Arkle contenders Golden Silver and Jayo - are they both okay?

WM: I'm not happy with how Jayo galloped and jumped on Sunday so we'll leave him at home, but Golden Silver did very well. He jumped well and finished well so we're very pleased with him.

So Jayo's out but Golden Silver goes there after an excellent run last time...

WM: He's done very well all season, he's jumping well and he's going the right way.

Apart from your novices you've got plenty of other chances. Quevega in the Mares' Hurdle - she won well at Punchestown last month...

WM: Quevega has really smart form, but for one blot in the mares' race at Punchestown last season. She was back late and we didn't get a lot of work into her but she came back well and won nicely at Punchestown and hopefully that'll be enough to see her fit to run well at Cheltenham. I think she's a very live chance.

How's Scotsirish doing?

WM: He did a fantastic bit of work and jumped really well on Sunday. I'm going to talk to the owner later in the week and see whether we take him to Cheltenham.

If you do bring him will he go for the Champion Chase?

WM: I think so. It'll be difficult to see him beating the main ones in that but he could run into some place money.

He'd be a lively outsider wouldn't he, he's shown some smart pieces of form?

WM: I thought he was running a great race in the Arkle last year until he made a mistake so I think he'll handle the track as well.

Your Bumper team Willie. I won't ask you about every single one of them but tell me about Sicilian Secret...

WM: He galloped very well at Leopardstown on Sunday and won nicely also last time. He looks like a nice relaxed horse as well, and I'm very happy with the way he's going.

Who is Patrick going to be on, that's usually a decent pointer for us!?

WM: We haven't decided jockey bookings yet, we'll wait until later in the week and when the ballot comes.

Last question Willie, which horse are you most looking forward to seeing run at the Festival next week?

WM: Quevega, Cooldine, Cousin Vinny and Mikael D'Haguenet are the four! I'm also looking forward to seeing which horse does best in the Bumper as they are always a good pointer for next season, to see where your best novice hurdlers or novice chasers are going to come from.
