A few winners last week at Ascot and hopefully another few to add this weekend – which, for me, is the best weekend flat racing of the year.
We have Champions weekend at Newmarket on Saturday and then it’s on to the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday. We start our weekend review at Newmarket on Friday with the Cheveley Park Stakes (2.40) and what a puzzling two-year-old race this is to work out.
We have opted for recent Ayr winner Aspen Darling (8/1) to beat the big boys after hacking up at the Scottish track.
The big race on Friday is the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes (3.15) and if MASTERCRAFTSMAN turns up then get on – if he doesn’t then take GALLAGHER (5/1) to finally get his head in front after a string of second places.
On to Saturday and we begin with the totesport.com Cambridgeshire Heritage Handicap (3.50) which we have narrowed down to two from a massive field.
YADDREE (10/1) hails from the very much in-form Michael Jarvis yard and beat a classy looking field at Newbury, so should be thereabouts coming to the final furlong. MIDSHIPS (20/1) comes from another in-form stable with Linda Perrat having her horses at the top of their game at the minute. This won over the course last month and looks a big each-way choice.
The French-trained DARJINA (4/1) could be the one to be on in the classy looking Chariot Stakes (3.15).
We finish on Sunday with the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp and what a race we have in store. The betting is led by the brilliant unbeaten filly ZARKAVA at 15/8 and it’s going take some horse to stop her on Sunday.
The big dangers are the Aidan O’Brien pairing of Duke of Marmalade and Soldier of Fortune.
Our each-way bet in the race is GETAWAY who looks way too big in the betting at 16/1 and has big place claims; don’t rule out last year’s ruuner-up YOUMAZIN at 10/1.
They Bet: Zarkava (15/8), Duke Of Marmalade (4/1), Soldier Of Fortune (11/2), Vision D’Etat (8/1), Youmzain (12/1), Getaway (16/1), Meisho Samson (20/1), Frozen Fire (25/1), Casual Conquest (25/1) , Papal Bull (25/1), Russian Cross (25/1) and it’s 33/1 bar this lot.
