WhAT’s the best tipping column around, and why are we? Let’s just say if you followed our soccer tips this year you would have Christmas well sorted.
Last week we gave out a near 12/1 winning quad on Friday night when Southampton (11/8), Derby (5/4), Huddersfield (4/7) and Notts County (8/11) all won to give us a great start to the weekend.
Then on Saturday we hit the target when our Fivehit touched with Arsenal (1/2), Spurs (4/7), Aberdeen (5/6), Blackpool (8/11) and Aston Villa (8/11) all winning – and one Whiterock punter took Sean Graham for a few quid as he stuck a fiver on the NINE-TEAM roll-up. At least somebody rolled it up, I forgot, but the winners keep coming for the PG and our readers are cashing in before Christmas – so hold on to it folks and don’t give it back.
PG WORLD CUP PLAY-OFFS XXX
A nail-biting match for Ireland at the weekend as they prepare to take on France at Croke Park in the first leg of their World Cup play-off.
A lot of betting pundits think the French are a penalty-kick on Saturday night at 6/4, and over the two legs – rule this Irish team out, is my advice.
Madcap France coach Raymond Domenech is under pressure after a poor group campaign in which Les Bleus lost out on the automatic qualifying spot for South Africa 2010 to Serbia and he has left Patrick Viera out of his squad, probably because his star sign is Scorpio.
Let’s look at the French stats on the road in qualifying. They won just two of their five games, but they are also hard to beat, losing just the once in 12 games – to Serbia.
Ireland under Giovanni Trapattoni are a hard team to beat. Winning four and drawing five in the qualifiers is solid form and they should give this French side a game on Saturday night. We have opted for the draw in Saturday’s game at 9/4, which will leave the tie in the balance going into Wednesday’s game in Paris.
RUSSIA (1/3) should beat Slovenia in Moscow but are too skinny for us, but we think Bosnia-Herzegovina can upset Portugal with a draw in Lisbon priced at a whopping 7/2.
GREECE have first leg home advantage in their game with UKRAINE, but we are taking Andrey Shevchenko and co to grab a draw in this one and beat the Greeks on home soil come Wednesday night. So a draw treble and do the usual XXX perm with doubles and the roll-up.
PG QUAD
On to the weekend quad and we start with our knocker of the weekend. We have gone for BRAZIL (5/4) to beat England in the ITV live game on Saturday evening.
SERBIA (6/5) had a great World Cup qualifying campaign and players are playing for their plane ticket to South Africa. I can see them beating Northern Ireland at Windsor.
BELGIUM (1/1) are good at home and can see off Hungary; making the weekend quad up are SPAIN (1/1) who look a solid bet against wobbly Argentina.
PG FIVEHIT
On to the weekend Fivehit and hopefully another five winners folks. We start with in-form HUDDERSFIELD (1/2) who look a banker against lowly Wycombe.
Aldershot (4/5) are hitting form and can take all points at home to Macclesfield, and staying in League Two BARNET (4/5) are also playing good stuff and another three points are there for the taking against Hereford.
PETERHEAD (8/13) are scoring for fun and can win at home to Arbroath, and making the Fivehit up are SOUTHAMPTON (4/6) who are on a golden run at the minute and can see off Brighton on Sunday.
SEAN GRAHAM £25 BET COMPETITION & WINNERS
Fancy a free £25 football bet at the weekend? Then enter our competition courtesy of PG sponsor Sean Grahams. Answer this very simple question: Who scored the first goal for Liverpool on Monday night? Answers by email all day today (Thursday) to puntersguide@ireland click.com or call 90 608840 before lunchtime today (Thursday). Winners will be notified Friday lunchtime.
We had four winners in our PG Competitions last week and only two of those four winners picked up their prizes – strange! Eamonn O'Flaherty and Willie Gargan picked their prizes but Thomas Agnew and Tim Wardlow failed to pick up a free £25 bet and tickets to Down Royal, so folks, if you are going to enter these competitions please collect your prizes.

inside info
AN ACTION-packed weekend of racing ahead with the three-day Paddy Power Gold Cup meeting at Cheltenham the main highlight and we could see the seasonal debut of Punters Guide’s and readers’ favourite horse of last year, ANDYTOWN.
Nicky Henderson has entered him in the Jardine Lloyd Thompson Handicap Hurdle run over his favourite trip of 2 miles and 5 furlongs.
He hosed up at this meeting last year and then in March he delivered a 25/1 knock-out blow to local bookmakers when winning the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival, and if he turns up on Saturday then get on.
PADDY POWER GOLD CUP - SATurday 2.35
On to the big race on Saturday and what a wide-open Paddy Power Gold Cup renewal we have this year.
David Pipe's dual Grade One winner Our Vic will have the burden of top-weight, 11st 12lb, should he take his chance in Saturday's feature. He loves it round here but is getting older and I think one of the young pretenders will win this one.
Champion trainer Paul Nicholls has three chances, having left in ante-post favourite Chapoturgeon, Poquelin and Tatenen, with Jewson Novices Handicap Chase winner Chapoturgeon looking his best hope with Timmy Murphys set to take the ride.
We have got it down to a short-list of two and first up is big Irish hope TRANQUIL SEA who is trained by Edward O’Grady, whose horses are in great heart at the minute.
He hacked up in the Poplar Square Chase at Naas last time up and will look for revenge over Chapoturgeon who beat him at the festival; having two runs under his belt could well swing things his way on Saturday – he is an early week 9/1 shot with Sean Grahams.
Nigel Twiston-Davies has BALLYFITZ in the race and he looked a promising sort this time last year when hacking up in the Sir Tristram Ricketts Novices Chase at this corresponding meeting, beating Big Fella Thanks 11 lengths, and he is no slouch. If he reproduces that run then he could run into a place at big odds.
Sean Graham Bet: Chapoturgeon 6, Tarotino 7, Poquelin 8, Tranquil Sea 9, My Petra 10, Northern Alliance 10, Tatenen 12 , Ballyfitz 20, Bible Lord 20, From Dawn To Dusk 20, Watch My Back 20, According To Pete 25, Akilak 25, Hold Em (25), I’m So Lucky 25, Tartak 25, Three Mirrors 25, Gaelic Flight 33, Il Duce 33, Jaamid 33.
A quick look through other races this weekend and here’s a few to keep an eye on.
We start at Cheltenham on Friday and the Grade 2 Sharp Novices' Hurdle where COOTEHILL could follow up on his easy Kempton win, while ex-Grand National winner SILVER BIRCH could well take the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase.
On to Saturday and Irish raider Roseska looks a good bet in the opener for trainer Kevin O’Donnell while the in-form TOBY JUG could run a big race in the Servo Trophy Handicap Chase.
On to Sunday and if Medermit turns up in the Greatwood Hurdle then back him, but if Alan King’s charge swerves it, get on HARRY TRICKER, who bolted up last time out.
Good story this:-
Pond Park punter Paul Duffy won’t forget his trip to a rain-soaked Down Royal racetrack in a hurry.
Before he headed off to the popular Lisburn track, Paul placed a bet in his local pitch in Lisburn – a £10 treble on his three big fancies and he just arrived at the course to see his first horse COOLE RIVER win the first race by a head at 6/1.
A £70 double was now on the cards and when SCHOLAR’S MATE won the 2pm at 3/1, a soaking wet but excited Paul had £280 riding on his last selection.
It was running in the feature of the day and he opted for the grey horse THE LISTENER who took full advantage of favourite Notre Pere’s mishap and to Paul’s delight he cantered home by 15 lengths at 7/1.
He picked up a massive £2,240 on Saturday night and told the PG he woke up with a big head on Sunday morning. I bet, but what a cracking bit of punting.
From a lucky bet to a not-so-lucky bet and taximan Jim Burns was left reeling on Monday after backing two horses and two football teams in a mad £100 quad that would have netted him over two grand.
He took drifting favourite Tiernan's Terror in the 4.05 at Limerick and he sauntered home at 3/1; and when SPINNING scooted up the finale at Wolverhampton at 2/1 he had a massive £1,200 double on the Monday night football – maybe he should have stopped at the horse double, I hear you say.
He took Millwall (4/11) who won 4-1 and then ‘bookies’ team’ LIVERPOOL (1/3) to beat Birmingham, but as we know, the faltering Reds could only draw 2-2 to leave Jim absolutely gutted.
and finally.. PG CUP news
We have new favourites for the PG Cup after the BOUCHER BANKERS at last hit the first winning quad of the season in the PG Cup to send last year’s beaten finalists packing.
They delivered a 13/1 winning quad too, and remember, they had a free Sean Graham £20 bet on their selections so they are £300 up and JP Crossan thinks it’s their year.
They look the team the remaining betting squads have to beat.
They will now face the 2007 winners, the DVLNI Punters, in the semi-final after the draw was made in the Sean Graham offices on Tuesday – what a match-up that is.
2006 winners the Citybus DUO will face BOMBARDIER HOTSHOTS if they can beat off the challenge of the BCC LEGAL EAGLES in next week’s remaining quarter-final game.
Semi-Final Draw: Saturday 28th November: BOUCHER BANKERS v DVLNI. Saturday 5th December: CITYBUS DUO/BCC LEGAL EAGLES v BOMBARDIER HOTSHOTS.
I reckon Ireland can nick a result against France, Robbie Keane always pulls it out for his country. If you fancy a cheeky punt, bear in mind the EU's refusal to allow an open gambling market means the odds are worse value than they should be. The political campaign at www.right2bet.net is petitioning to put this right. Add your support and stand up for consumer rights!
